IT APPEARS TO BE A RIVER CANYON, BUT LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING. Today's most conservative explanation for the Monterey Canyon (MC) is that routine ocean currents, waves, tides, storm surges, slumps, and underwater landslides produced this sprawling seafloor construction. With frequent seismic assistance from earthquakes, of course, no matter how minor the temblors may be. Rallying beneath the banner of simple Sediment Transport (ST), this latest theorem for the MC's origin forgoes invocation of much more difficult theories like ice age meltdowns and catastrophic geology. From the ST camp's perspective, mile-deep canyons traversing hundreds of miles can be fashioned underwater as easily as upon land. It just takes Mother Nature a tad bit longer to finish a submarine version.
